Chapter 10

THE DEVIL AND THE DOCTOR

Sitting on the southeast corner of East John and Queen Streets is a small, brick, rather nondescript-looking building. It is situated diagonally across from the stunning St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the most visually arresting structure on that particular block. Prior to this small building accenting this corner, there was a church that stood at this spot. The Central Church of the Christian Disciples of Christ was located here, and information regarding it seems to be quite scarce. From what I’ve been able to gather, it was a totally different structure with a stucco exterior, and it was torn down for the building of the current structure. It was first listed in the old city phone directories in 1920, and the last year it was listed was in 1960. Prior to the church’s existence on the corner, there is said to have been a house at this particular spot. The basement of the current building is said to have been the first floor of the house. For example, when the church was located here, when you were in what is now the basement and opened the outside entrance door, you would walk out onto the sidewalk. When you open that same door now, you encounter a wall of dirt. So what is now the basement was originally the first floor, and the pavement and the street have been built up and developed over time. A baptismal pool from the church is still said to be located down in the basement.

Many years ago, when the church was torn down, the current building was erected as an optometrist office, and a framed picture of the church was proudly mounted on the wall in the office. As I stated previously, this is a rather ordinary looking building; however, appearances can be deceiving, and a chain of horrifying events unfolded here that was very much out of the ordinary! Shortly after the office opened and business commenced, the staff began noticing a variety of subtle yet nerve-jangling events. They would hear what sounded like voices arguing coming from the back of the building, and at other times, it sounded like a multitude of voices in unison, as if a congregation were holding a service. When they arrived in the morning and opened the office, the stereo, which had been turned off the previous evening when closing up, would be found turned on. Another eerie finding upon opening the office would be evidence of someone, or something, having typed on the typewriters. What was particularly alarming about this was that no actual words or sentences would be typed out on paper, just letters and what appeared to be illegible gibberish.
